The Ed Dubois designed Jeanneau Sunway 29 is a delight to sail. She is quick and responsive, and very manageable. “Calypso” has been used mainly for weekend cruising in the Solent and surrounding areas between Weymouth and Brighton, with typically a couple of cross Channel cruise trips each year.

She has been regularly maintained and upgraded so that she is a very competent cruiser with all bugs ironed out. Excellent for short handed sailing and family cruising, and for the money is a lot of boat which will provide a very high satisfaction ratio per £ pound!!

Lying ashore at Swanwick Marina, outside our office, this boat is conveniently located for viewings.

Owners Comments

  • Owners CommentsThe boat has been owned by me for about 9 years. The first few years I had to sort out a few things to make it suitable for what I wanted to do with it (at first short handed sailing), then later I used it for cruising, day sailing and cruiser club racing. This was my 4th yacht I have owned and it is the one I have owned the longest. Reason choosing it was it did not have a pokey forward cabin so the saloon was relatively spacious, easy to keep clean, a Yanmar engine, could be sailed Solo or crewed/small family, it had a fractional rig with adjustable backstay, and a good downwind sail set up and was likely to be fun to sail.  Typically each year Calypso is Day Sailed or weekends in the Solent very often, a cruise to Weymouth or Brighton twice a year and cross channel cruise to France or Channel Islands twice a year. Calypso is often sailed with two or three persons on board, sometimes solo often with four, occasionally 5 and rarely 6. I set the boat up so it sails well very in light air but also can be reefed down to sail with grandchild, non sailors and in breezy conditions. The yacht currently has a slightly over sized mainsail chosen specifically so I can enjoy light air days. The boat came to me with very good spinnaker set up, so over the years I have improved on this and used the downwind sails extensively.  The yacht is at its best it a variety of conditions: -  Calm or light air days in the summer sailing in the Solent, small enough to get a berth in the crowded harbours or sheltered anchorages around the coast. Fast cross channel sailing passages in F3 to F4 winds, Anchoring and rock hopping around the channel islands. RTIR in the cruiser fleet even with a full crew of 6, thrashing about winds up to 24-25 kts true or round the cans cruiser club  racing solo, 2, 3, 4 or 5 crew.  The boat has completed surprisingly quick cross channel passages and “punches well above her weight” compared to other similar larger yachts. The boat has very a good snug F6/7 third reef in the mainsail and in these same winds the current roller reefed genoa is fine reaching or downwind but just about OK going to windward. It is not obvious at first, but the person/crew that operates the mainsheet stands on top of the engine bay lid, this frees up the cockpit for other guests/crew and the mainsail trimmer can safely be 6ft tall (and still not be at risk with the boom) because ethe engine bay step is slightly lower than the cockpit floor. Also when on the helm the person is just aft of the boom, so again can be safety be 6ft tall.  The mainsheet and genoa sheets can also be reached by a solo person on the helm by means of a tiller extension. If you want to potter about on a nice day with a small family in the Solent, Calypso is fantastic, if you want to cruise and visit those little bays, easily get into busy harbours in the summer and fit onto those close spaced mooring buoys in Braye Harbour, excellent. If you want to sail solo along the coast and local then excellent.  If you want go for a exciting sail and get that adrenaline flowing, then she is really good for that too.  Great for trying a go at the RTIR as well.  Meanwhile the marina berthing is very easy, stress free. If needed the powerful engine will very likely help you get you out of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If the new owner is not an experienced sailor, then I suggest they will be very competent after a couple of years of owning Calypso. If they are experienced sailors then they will love all the wide variety of wind speed and polars capability,  responsiveness, tweaking and fun. I come home grinning and satisfied after every sail. Calypso will be a hard act to follow.
