Yacht Overview

“Spartan” is a gem of a yacht and a rare find in that she is one single owner from new. She has not been raced or rallied hard and is in excellent condition given her age.

The deck layout has evolved to incorporate a highly efficient sail set up with inner and outer jib tracks, self tacking 100% jib and larger over lapper. As with all Rod Johnstone designed boats, she is a joy to sail with the best of the “J-Boat DNA”. This superb yacht just eats up the miles for fast effortless cruising and is a sailors yacht.

“Spartan” has been maintained for offshore cruising over the years and the Volvo D2 diesel and Saildrive are replacements installed about 7 years ago. The old antifouling was blasted off in 2023 and repainted anew.

Berthed afloat at Bucklers Hard in the Beaulieu River, viewings are easy to arrange and this lovely yacht will not disappoint.

UK Vat Paid. This boat is not EU Tax Paid.

Sails

Spartan has mainly been sailed with 100% blade jib and main with a furling Code Zero with Harken furler, and set up for short handed use. All the sails are by SANDERS apart from the new North jib.

  • Peter Sanders carbon laminate, fully battened mainsail about 10 yrs. old but still sound and in shape
  • North% blade jib effectively unused
  • Sanders Code Zero about 10 years old but light use
  • Storm jib 23 years old but unused
  • Large and small asymmetric spinnakers 23 years old
  • Spinnaker squeezer which could do with a new sock
  • An older Code Zero, larger and in slightly heavier cloth
  • Harken furling unit for Code Zero

Interior

Used as a cruising boat she was not significantly detuned and the main departure from basic or full race specification were:

  • 5-6 berths with a double forecabin, double aft cabin and two singles in the saloon
  • Bookshelves and lockers in the saloon in place of pilot berths. This is a bespoke option
  • Bespoke stand up chart table
  • Small diesel fired cabin heating system
  • Larger cooker with oven
  • 2 x stainless steel sinks
  • Hot & cold water system
  • Top loader fridge
  • Separate heads compartment with marine w.c. washbasin and shower

Owners Comments

“Spartan” has been used for short handed long distance sailing going three times down to the Canaries, three times out to the Azores, a circuit of the Mediterranean, Ireland, Scotland etc. and basically her fitout reflects that. She had had no insurance claims during her lifetime and has only sailed a handful of low key races which, in the main, she won. She has been an excellent yacht which I have owned from new, but the time has sadly come to pass her on to a new owner who can realise her potential for new adventures.
