There is not a lot our MD, Nigel, doesn't know about yacht racing and campaigning Sunfast 3200s, 3300s and 3600s as he has sailed them all for many years. Here are one or two race yacht tips to be going on with but, if there is something in particular that you would like to know, then use the button to "Ask Nigel" and he will post the answer below.

Todd from the Land Down Under asks...

Hi Nigel 180 nm Bunbury race - 2nd by 4 min to Crush a Sun Fast 3600. Overall results for Div 1 and 2. Jib 0 and genoa staysail are great. Used the J0 with a No1 or No 2 Jib a lot when reaching. Any hints on keeping the boat moving under 4 kts TWS. We had a short chop and could not get the boat to go at all. Does reverse ballasting help in the really light airs? What’s Fastrak XII been doing in these light airs? We stopped….0.00. regards Todd

Ballast can help in short chop upwind so definitely could be worth trying in this scenario as the boat does like heel. You might struggle with no speed getting ballast in the windward scoop however!

Normally in light stuff you can let tack off but if a short chop then this would probably destabilise the kite more. No easy solution, but I would say definitely in these situations best to get boat moving in any direction to get flow over keel/rudders before going for depth or where you want to go. Keeping momentum is key.
