Welcome to the Jeanneau's Sun Odyssey 440, the first of the next generation of the Sun Odyssey range, and the latest incarnation of this popular mid-size yacht that is full of surprises. The designers of the new Sun Odyssey 440 have started with a clean sheet of paper to produce a clever ergonomic design and innovative layout - while of course retaining the quality and "sailability" of the renowned Sun Odyssey range.
The New Odyssey 440 incorporates many features from the larger yachts design including a wide bodied hull and large square ports together with the distinctive hard chines running almost the full length of the hull, a standard Bowsprit and Twin rudders. The Rig of the yacht is stayed fully outboard and a lower boom height makes for easier mainsail handling.
But you must step on-board to understand the true innovations in this new Jeanneau model. The cockpit is cleverly designed to place the twin wheels and primary winches slightly inboard, this allows a safe walkway outboard of the wheels and around to the side decks effectively inside a high bulwark that is elegant, safe and reassuring. Crew and guests can therefore move easily around the cockpit of the yacht to go forward without having to climb across cockpit seats.
The cockpit also holds more surprises as in "relaxation mode" at anchor, the cockpit seat backs can cantilever to create two huge flat lounging areas, perfect for sunbathing and sleeping under the stars.
The interior is simply cavernous for a 43’ cruising yacht hull, with modern styling, a gently raked companionway plus cabins with wide doorways without threshold steps or headroom restriction maximizing ease of movement. All is well illuminated by the abundance of light coming from the hull and deck windows and hatches. The galley is at the heart of the accommodation, also with new innovative ideas including a pop-up microwave that keeps work surfaces free and tidy when not in use.
Sailing performance from this latest Briand design is very satisfying with the generous rig, chines and twin rudder configuration providing fast and stable passage making the Jeanneau 440 one of the best in its class.
