It’s been an exciting couple of weeks for Nigel Colley.  The Triangle Race, run expertly by The Royal Cornwall Yachting Club, started on 8th June with Nigel racing solo in the Sun Fast 3200, Encore. With a total of eight 3200s in the race there was a ‘race within a race’ to be had, with four of them racing solo.   So, ready, showered, shopped, boats jobs done and athlete’s breakfast eaten, he set sail on leg 1 from Falmouth to Kinsale.

Leg 1

After arriving safely in Kinsale, Nigel joined in the obligatory mid-race activities, enjoying beautiful Kinsale’s finest scenery, including the socials and camaraderie.  At this point, he was lying 3rd solo boat, not a bad position, but still work to be done!

Leg 2 – Kinsale to Treguier

“This is the race’s longest leg at 300 miles which also acts as a Qualifier for the 2027 Azores and Back Race (AZAB). Tough for a soloist as too long to do without sleep!! The first leg along the Irish coast was delightful sailing under Code 0 to a turning mark, followed by boisterous upwind conditions and rain squalls. Staying to the North of the rhumb line on the approach to Treguier, Nigel got the tide and wind right for a good finish to the leg before the wind died, finishing 2nd Solo and 5th Overall.”

Leg 3 – Treguier to Falmouth

“Thick fog hampered the start and you could not see from one end of the line to the other! A modified procedure was successfully employed by the Race Committee to get the fleet away safely into Sargasso Weed infested waters. The sprit to the finish was compromised by weed around the keel or saildrive which I could just not remove, and so finished in the middle of the pack on this leg.”

On aggregated corrected time for the Event, Nigel finished 2nd Overall in the Solo Division and 6th Overall in the whole race Solo and Double Handed combined”. After a few seasons away from the offshore short-handed circuit it was great to get back out there again and find some of the old magic.
